Objective: To determine the relationship between family functioning and depression in adolescents at the Dr. José Antonio Encinas Franco Educational Institution in Tacna, Peru. Material and Methods: A descriptive, crosssectional, and correlational study with a sample of 160 secondary school students, selected by simple random sampling, following informed consent from parents and assent from the students. The instruments applied were the Smilkstein G. Family APGAR Test and the Beck Depression Inventory
(BDI-II). The Chi-square test was used for analysis. Results: According to the level of family functioning, the results were: moderate dysfunction (31.3%), mild dysfunction (27.5%), severe dysfunction (25%), and finally, normal
functioning (16.2%). Regarding the level of depression, the following was identified: moderate depression (35.6%), followed by minimal depression (27.5%), mild depression (23.8%), and lastly, severe depression (13.1%). Students with
severe family dysfunction were those who presented the highest proportions of moderate and severe depression (9.4% and 8.1%, respectively), while those with moderate
dysfunction primarily showed moderate and mild depression (15% and 8.1%, respectively). A direct and significant relationship was concluded between family functioning and depression (p<0.01). Conclusion: A relationship exists between family functioning and depression in adolescents at the Dr. José Antonio Encinas Franco Educational Institution in Tacna.
