Objective: To determine the frequency and associated factors of homophobia among human medicine students at a public university in Peru. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 80 medical students at the National University of Jorge Basadre Grohmann in Tacna, Peru. An anonymous online questionnaire was administered, after obtaining informed consent, which included the Homophobia-7 scale, the Francis-5 scale for religiosity, and the Sexual Machismo scale. For the analysis, the Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and Student's t-test were used, as appropriate, using STATAversion 16 software. Results: The frequency of homophobia among medical students was 41 %. Students aged 25-29 years (62.5 %), males (51.2 %), those who had attended to a homosexual patient (44.4 %), those who did not have a homosexual family member (42.1 %), those who did not have homosexual friends (43.9 %), and machista students (56.82 %) showed a higher frequency of homophobia. Students with homophobia had a religiosity score of 13.6, while those without had a score of 12.15. Only a significant association with machismo was found (p=0.002). Conclusions: Homophobia among medical students was high and associated with machismo.
