Abstract

Objective: To determine the factors associated with prolonged hospital stay in preterm neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Hipólito Unanue Hospital during the period January 2022 - January 2023. Material and method: An observational, quantitative, retrospective, analytical, cross-sectional and relational study was carried out. The sample consisted of 47 preterm infants who were hospitalized in the NICU of the Hipólito Unanue Hospital during the period January 2022 - January 2023, with a hospital stay of 7 days or more. Medical records that did not contain all the necessary data were excluded. The data were collected from medical records using a data collection form. Results: The main variables associated with prolonged hospital stay were: 1 minute APGAR score with severe and moderate depression (p: 0.029), hyaline membrane disease (p: 0.000), neonatal sepsis (p: 0.011), retinopathy of prematurity (p: 0.034), neurological risk (p: 0.048), anemia (p: 0.000). No significant association was found between the maternal characteristics evaluated and the presence of prolonged hospital stay (p> 0.000). Conclusions: The evaluated neonatal factors were significantly associated with prolonged hospital stay in preterm neonates in the NICU of the Hipólito Unanue Hospital.
