Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the association between treatment adherence and its effectiveness and safety in patients with drug-susceptible tuberculosis in the southern and northern micro-networks of Tacna in 2022. Materials and Methods: A non-experimental, cross-sectional, and retrospective study was conducted on 107 patients diagnosed with tuberculosis and complete treatment records. Patients with resistant tuberculosis or incomplete information were excluded. Through the review of medical records and structured records, data was analyzed using the chi-square test to determine the association between categorical variables. Results: 92.5% of patients showed adequate treatment adherence and achieved cure. This association between adherence and effectiveness was significant (p<0.001). Regarding safety, 93.5% of patients did not report severe adverse reactions, indicating high treatment safety. However, no significant association was found between adherence and the presence of adverse reactions (p=0.169). Reported adverse reactions consisted mainly of gastric discomfort, skin reactions, or neurological reactions. Conclusion: Adherence is key to maximizing effectiveness, although better management is needed to minimize side effects. This approach provides strategies to improve care and reduce the impact of tuberculosis on public health.
