Level of knowledge about the application of the Safe Surgery Checklist among professionals of the surgical team at the Hipólito Unanue Hospital in Tacna

Abstract

Background: The Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC), developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a standardized tool designed to reduce adverse events associated with surgical procedures by promoting patient safety throughout the perioperative process. Although its implementation is mandatory in Peru, healthcare professionals' level of knowledge may influence its appropriate application. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge regarding the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist among healthcare professionals working in the Operating Room of Hipólito Unanue Hospital in Tacna. Materials and Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The study population included general surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing professionals working in the hospital's operating room. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Results: A total of 55 healthcare professionals participated in the study. The overall mean knowledge score was 15.9 ± 2.58 out of 20 points. Most participants (94.5%) correctly identified the primary objective of the SSC, while 98.2% recognized the importance of team member identification before surgery. Nursing professionals achieved the highest knowledge scores among the three professional groups. In addition, all participants agreed with the implementation of the SSC in their institution. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals demonstrated an overall favorable level of knowledge regarding the Surgical Safety Checklist. Nevertheless, knowledge gaps were identified concerning its structure, role assignment, and specific components. These findings support the need for continuous education and interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize SSC implementation and strengthen patient safety in the surgical setting.
