Epidemiological Factors Related to the Use of Ancestral Traditional Medicine Knowledge for COVID-19 in Pregnant Women in Tacna, 2020-2022

Objective: to determine the epidemiological factors related to the use of traditional ancestral medicine knowledge for covid-19 in pregnant women in the tacna region during the years 2020-2022. Materials and methods: observational, analytical, retrospective, and explanatory research. The population consisted of 1016 pregnant women diagnosed with covid-19 registered at health facilities in tacna. The sample included 175 pregnant women selected by simple random sampling. A structured questionnaire validated by expert judgment was administered. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test using spss version 25 software. Results: 80.0% of pregnant women reported having used some form of traditional ancestral medicine knowledge during the pandemic. The use of medicinal plants was the most frequent (69.14%), followed by animals or their derivatives (51.43%). A significant association was found between the use of traditional ancestral medicine and age during covid-19 (p=0.004), level of education (p=0.040), and monthly family income (p<0.01). A significant association was also found with clinical factors such as asymptomatic condition, loss of smell, cough, loss of taste, fever, muscle pain, and clinical severity classification (p<0.05). No association was found with obstetric factors. Conclusion: sociodemographic and clinical factors were significantly related to the use of traditional ancestral medicine knowledge among pregnant women in tacna during the covid-19 pandemic. Medicinal plants were the most frequently used ancestral therapeutic resource.
