Regenerative Therapies in the Treatment of Peri-implantitis

Objective: To analyze the regenerative therapies used in the treatment of peri-implantitis through a scientific literature review. Methodology: A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO databases. The keywords used were "peri-implantitis," "dental implants," "bone regeneration," "guided tissue regeneration," and "platelet-rich fibrin," combined with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Priority was given to articles published between 2020 and 2025; however, classic studies relevant to the understanding of specific regenerative therapies were also included. Results: Regenerative therapies have gained relevance in the management of peri-implantitis due to their ability to promote peri-implant tissue regeneration and preserve dental implants. Among the main strategies described are the use of Er:YAG laser for implant surface decontamination, reconstructive therapy using biomaterials —such as inorganic bovine bone associated with collagen membranes—, guided bone regeneration (GBR), electrolytic cleaning, and the use of autologous platelet concentrates. Conclusion: Regenerative therapies represent a promising alternative for the treatment of peri-implantitis; however, further controlled clinical trials are required to establish standardized therapeutic protocols.
