Analysis of the Effectiveness of Gingival Crevicular Blood in Estimating Diabetes

Diabetes is a public health problem in Peru. An intraoral blood sampling method would facilitate screening by dentists, regardless of whether or not a diagnosis has been made. Objective: To determine if gingival crevicular blood sampling has a comparable level of effectiveness to capillary blood sampling in estimating glycemic status. Method: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 58 participants diagnosed with gingivitis or periodontitis who presented with bleeding on probing in at least one site. Periodontal parameters, including probing depth and gingival index, were evaluated using the Williams graduated periodontal probe. Gingival crevicular blood (GCB) and capillary blood samples were obtained by fingerstick for glucose level determination using a glucometer. Results: Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a very high correlation between SCG and SPC, with a coefficient of 0.982 and a statistical significance value of p < 0.001, indicating a strong and statistically significant positive association between the two measurements. Conclusion: SCG may be a potential screening tool for diabetes during periodontal examination, especially in patients with unknown history of the disease and moderate bleeding on probing.
