Descubrimiento del virus de la hepatitis C: avances científicos que transformaron el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la hepatitis viral

La hepatitis C constituyó durante décadas un enigma médico, particularmente en el contexto de la hepatitis postransfusional clasificada como hepatitis no-A, no-B. El descubrimiento del virus de la hepatitis C (VHC) representó un hito fundamental en la historia de la medicina moderna, al permitir la identificación de la principal causa de hepatitis crónica, cirrosis y carcinoma hepatocelular a nivel mundial. Objetivo: describir, desde una perspectiva histórica, el proceso científico que condujo al descubrimiento del VHC y analizar su impacto en el diagnóstico, la prevención y el tratamiento de la enfermedad. Material y métodos: Se realizó una revisión narrativa de fuentes históricas primarias y literatura científica indexada, destacando las contribuciones de Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton y Charles M. Rice. Resultados: Estos avances posibilitaron el desarrollo de métodos diagnósticos seguros y terapias antivirales altamente eficaces, transformando una enfermedad crónica y potencialmente mortal en una condición curable. Conclusión: El estudio del VHC representa un ejemplo paradigmático de cómo la investigación biomédica puede cambiar el curso de la salud pública mundial.
